"Hi!  I am really excited about the new school year and I hope you are, too! There are lots of new things in store to bring out the artist in all of us as individuals and as a team of artists!"

"Are YOU ready to create?!"

My name is Sarah Stevens and here is my story!

I am new to LPMS, but not to D38. I taught at Lewis Palmer High School from 1996-2005. I then moved to Doherty High School. In the meantime, we built a house in Palmer Lake so here I am happily back in D38! Doing the math, I have been teaching art for 26 years...half of my life! I personally have been making art since before my first memories. It is my passion and I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to share my knowledge, skills, and excitement about art with you!

I grew up in Pennsylvania and went to a small high school near Pittsburgh. I have a lot of artists in my family who nurtured my creativity and summers were spent wandering the Smithsonian museums and living at the beach. I was a very sick kid and spent a lot of time in the hospital as a child.  I had a lot of lonely hospital stays where art was my only company...how lucky I was. I had a couple of great art teachers who pushed me to create and follow my dreams of being an artist. Either that, or being a veterinarian...how different are those two careers?

So, it was off to college at the University of Mount Union in Ohio, where my sister was a star athlete and a senior...needless to say, we didn't see much of each other. I ran track and was on the swim team, as well as being in several theatre productions. I loved college where I had two amazing art professors and with their help, I was able to spend half of my junior year painting in Southern France. I graduated in 1992 with a degree in art and psychology and was headed to grad school. And then, I chickened out.

So, Colorado called and I made a huge move across the country to figure things out. After running the Cultural Arts program at one of the Boys and Girls Clubs in Colorado Springs, I decided I wanted to teach art in a public school. I took out some massive loans and went back to college for another degree, this time at The Colorado College majoring in Education. I was hired at Lewis-Palmer High School in 1996 and taught there for nine years. I met my husband who was a social studies teacher at Doherty and made the move to teach there in 2005.

So, here we are! To sum up some informational and interesting facts about me, I would add that I am a working artist. I sell paintings and jewelry primarily and have a studio at my home. I love to garden. I hate hail storms. I raise chickens and ducks, have four dogs, and a cat. I ski, camp, cycle, and love the sun! My family consists of my husband, Kevin Vick (yes, we have different last names), and Aliza, who is a senior at PRHS. My favorite color is orange, my favorite place to vacation is Mexico, my favorite city is Washington D.C., and my favorite part of Colorado is ski country.

Oh, and did I mention that ART is my FAVORITE thing?! Welcome to my world...I hope you enjoy the journey!
